In the northwest of the country, on the banks of the river Varta, Poznan is one of the oldest cities in Poland, with over a thousand years of history. In addition to its picturesqueness, a strong university tradition breathes life into its historic corners.
The Plaza Mayor, also called the Market, is one of those that makes you just fall in love. It opens up as a focal point with a mix of buildings with brightly colored facades from different stylistic periods: from Gothic to Baroque through the Renaissance. The city hall building, bestowed with three magnificent arcade floors, built in the 16th century, is another of its emblems. The Imperial Castle can be visited as it is now a cultural center with exhibition halls, an auditorium and theater.

As in other Polish cities, religious buildings stand out. The magnificent building of the Jesuit College, from the 18th century, neighbors the baroque church of San Estanislao. From the middle of the river Varta emerges Ostrow Tumski, also called the Cathedral Island, where the Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul sits. Originating in the 10th century, and in the Gothic style, it has been rebuilt several times. It is the oldest place in Poznan and is even where the state of Poland was founded.
If you want to enjoy the city as a native, stroll along Lake Malta, a large park with a lake and restaurants, which in winter has an artificial ski slope with cable car included. |
