Next to the river Rhône, Arles is at the gates of the largest delta in France. Its remarkable Roman legacy includes the Roman Amphitheater, dating from the year 90 B.C. It is one of the best preserved in France, an impressive construction carved into the rock on the hill of Hauture. The Roman Theater and the 4th century AD Baths of Constantine on the river's edge are other jewels not to be missed.
The facade of the Cathedral of San Trófimo is considered to be one of the best examples of Provencal Romanesque architecture. It is in the Plaza de la República, the epicenter of Arles, from where you can access the Roman Cryptoporticos, vaulted passageways.

Within the beautiful old town full of history, you will find small charming hotels. The Arles Antique Museum (get there by walking along the Rhone River) houses one of the most remarkable collections of Roman art in the world, with magnificent mosaics of ancient Roman villas.
The city is intimately linked to the painter Van Gogh. It was here that the genius of Impressionism in 1888, dazzled by the light of Provence, came. Follow in his footsteps along a signposted circuit and deepen your knowledge of his legacy in the Van Gogh Space. The cafes and their terraces are part of the life of Arles. Café la Nuit, immortalized by Van Gogh in a painting, is already legendary. |
