In the historical region of the Ardennes, in the east of Belgium, is this at once commercial and cultural city. This Francophone area of Wallonia, has a valuable historical heritage. The Palace of the Bishops Princes testifies to the power that the independent principality of Liege acquired for eight centuries.
Highlights include the Cathedral of Saint Paul, originally from the 10th century, with rich ornamentation from the XVI, and the Collegiate Church of St Barthélmy. When strolling through the charming old town of Liege, look at its magical dead-end cobbled alleys, the so-called Impasses. Rue Hors-Chateau, the most famous street, sports old stately homes from the 17th and 18th centuries.

If you arrive in Liege by train, the Liége-Guillemins station will not leave you indifferent. Designed by the architect Santiago Calatrava, it is one of the most innovative in Europe. The unusual staircase Montage de Bueren, in the center of Liège, with 374 steps, is attributed to diverse origins. It has become an emblem of the city and leads to the Citadel of Liege, with a unique pentagonal plant.
This is the ideal city to enjoy the traditional Liege waffle, sweeter and more rustic than its cousin from Brussels. Also get to know the extraordinary range of Belgian beers, more than 1,500 types, and the exquisite creations of their chocolatiers. |
