Known as the Pink City for the number of buildings with brick facades of that tone, Toulouse is immediately attractive. The bricks reflect the Romans' ability to establish towns where there were no stone quarries. Its medium size, charming streets, and its pedestrian quality, make it ideal to enjoy quietly. Here are almost two hundred Renaissance stately homes.
One of the most important buildings to visit is the Basilica of St. Sernín, considered the largest Romanesque church in Europe. Don't miss the Cathedral of St.Etienne, the convent of the Jacobins, and the magnificent Capitol Square.
|
An added appeal of visiting the museums of Toulouse is their location in spectacular Renaissance mansions, such as the Paul Dupuy Museum of decorative arts, and the Bemberg Foundation, with paintings by the greats of the twentieth century. Walking along the Garona River is another marvelous route. The bridge of San Pedro is worth crossing. The Canal du Midi, which connects Toulouse with the Mediterranean Sea and was started in the 17th century, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Set in the south of France, the capital of the Midi-Pyrenees region is an ideal point from which to visit Carcassonne, cradle of the Cathars and the medieval Albi. In the heart of the historic center you will find charming hotels. |
