Reaching the island of Ithaca implies a mythical journey. Here Homer, author of the Odyssey, crowned Ulysses as king returning after years of exile. If you choose it as your destination, do not forget to pack this splendid Greek epic poem, dating from the 8th century B.C. Ithaca can only be accessed from the neighboring Ionian Islands, the archipelago to which it belongs. And getting here is part of the adventure of exploring Ithaca.
With steep and forested landscape inland, you will enjoy the authenticity walking through rural roads, among olive trees, vineyards and pine forests. And on the coast, its beaches ensure the immense peace of the less frequented places. Still, a true paradise.

The capital Vathy is sheltered in a large bay which can be reached through a narrow arm of the sea. The houses of this fishing village, where simplicity reigns, unfold along the side of the mountain facing one of the largest natural harbors in Europe.
With the shape of a figure eight, the island is practically divided into two areas joined by a narrow passage of land. So there is an Ithaca of the north and of the south, the latter is more folkloric. Among the best beaches are Dexa (where Ulysses landed after his odyssey), and the most hidden Asphales, embraced by imposing cliffs and forests. If you go up to the Monastery of the Virgin Kathariotissa, you will enjoy a wonderful panorama. |

This Art Hotel is located at the pictureque port of Vathi on the island of Ithaka, off the western coast of Greece. Home to the greatest traveller of them all, Odysses, Ithaca remains one of Greece's hidden treasures. The island is the fifth largest of the Ionian islands, covering an area of 96 square kilometres, with a coastline of about 100 kilometres. The hotel is housed in a light blue neo-classical building designed by the 19th Century German architect, Ernt Schiller. The traditional design of the building is innovately combined with modern elements, while a slight ethnic touch and selected works of art by prominent artists create a unique atmosphere. The impressive "Wrath (crown) of glory" and the 12 metre high stainless steel, "Astroparos" (Lighthouse of the Stars) by Nikos-Yorgos Papoutsidis, various works by Steven Antonakos and Antonis Kyriakoulis, as well as naive frescoes by a greek artist, blend harmoniously with modern lighting by Ingo Maurer and Tom Dixon, chairs by Verner Panton, rattan belle-époque armchairs and a 19th Century nomadic tapestry from northern Iraq, all contribute to the unique ambience. From the theatrically designed terraces with lovely views towards the breakfast room, where one may enjoy an equisite breakfast, the interior designer has created comfortable corners where guests can feel at home.
