Located in the heart of downtown Salem, Massachusetts, The Merchant is set in a magnificent Federal-style building, originally commissioned in 1784 by Salem's richest sea merchant and privateer, Joshua Ward. Built by the famous architect Samuel McIntire, this fabulous property has recently undergone an extensive restoration and renovation, and now offers luxurious boutique accommodation in a unique heritage setting.

Ideally placed for visiting this fascinating historic port, The Merchant is within easy walking distance of many of Salem's most outstanding points of interest, including the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem Common, the Witch Museum or the House of the Seven Gables, among many other fascinating landmarks. Steeped in history, The Merchant's interior design reflects the heritage of the house and the city, while incorporating modern furnishings and colour schemes, with gray/blues, rich reds, dark purples, and deep emerald greens mixed with Asian accents. Other highlights are the restored wainscotting and panelling, and the spectacular ''floating'' staircases, originally created by Samuel McIntire.

Configured a bit differently from our King Deluxe rooms, but still quite spacious, our comfortable Queen Deluxe rooms also showcase brilliant architectural details from 18th Century architect Samuel McIntire. Queen Deluxe guest rooms offer a plush queen bed with a custom-made padded headboard, gas fireplace, 40" LED smart TV with Apple TV, iPod docking station, iPad, and a comfy lounge chair. Queen Deluxe rooms have individually-controlled AC and heat, free wireless Internet access, and a private bath with shower and individually-controlled heated floors. Queen Deluxe are located on the first, second and third floors. Room size approximately 28 sq m.
King Deluxe:
King Deluxe rooms at The Merchant Salem boutique hotel offer 30 square metres of comfortable and architecturally stunning accommodations. These spacious guest rooms offer a plush king bed with a custom-made padded headboard, gas fireplace, 40" LED smart TV with Apple TV, iPod docking station, iPad, and a seating area with two lounge chairs. King Deluxe rooms have individually-controlled AC and heat, free wireless Internet access, and a private bath with shower and individually-controlled heated floors. Two of the rooms at this Salem boutique hotel fall into this category and offer 30 square metres of comfortable and architecturally stunning accommodations. George Washington King Deluxe:
President George Washington slept here. Seriously, he did! Stay in the room specifically requested by the newly-elected president in 1789 during his visit to Salem. Offering extra Washington-inspired welcome treats, guests will get a kick out of resting their heads in the room once occupied by the great general and father of the United States. The George Washington room offers 30 square metres of comfortable and architecturally stunning space, with a plush king bed with a custom-made padded headboard, gas fireplace, 40" LED smart TV with Apple TV, iPod docking station, USB charging outlets, an iPad loaded with local information, and a seating area with two lounge chairs. This room has individually-controlled AC and heat, free wireless Internet access, and a private bath with shower and individually-controlled heated floors. The George Washington room features original panelling, window seats, and lovely woodwork details from 18th Century architect Samuel McIntire. Windows overlook the front yard. This room is located on the second floor.
Lark Suite:
This signature Salem hotel suite has a style all its own! Named after the parent hotel collection, this Salem boutique hotel suite offers a glorious soaking tub for two. Other features include a plush king bed with a custom-made padded headboard, gas fireplace, 40" LED smart TV with Apple TV, iPod docking station, iPad, and a seating area with a day bed and side table.
