Ancient capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is one of the most beautiful historical cities in Peru, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Colonial architecture gives it great character with an added twist: vestiges of Inca culture appear in many of its buildings.
In the Plaza de Armas are the spectacular Cathedral of Cusco, a mixture of Baroque and Plateresque style, as well as the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús, with its imposing Baroque façade. It is an emblematic point from where you enter the historic center, with its attractive network of streets and cobbled squares full of life. In the San Blas neighborhood, you can admire magnificent colonial houses and the work of local craft workshops.
|
The church of San Blas is located on what was an ancient Inca temple. If you go up its steep streets you will get good views over the city. In the Santo Domingo Convent, the base of the Inca temple of Qorikancha is a highlight.
The city treasures many other Inca remains such as Tambomachay and Sacsayhuaman, built with impressive stone blocks. Be sure to visit the San Pedro Market. In addition to the building, built by Gustav Eiffel, it is an excellent place to sample local cuisine. Beautiful colonial buildings, with an interior patio, house boutique hotels with a lot of charm. |
