Sintra is the epitome of the Portuguese soul. It is an amalgam of cultures, deep rooted traditions and stately legacy, while at the same time picturesque in a magnificent natural environment. Nestled between the hills of the Sintra mountain range in a natural park, the town is only 30 km from Lisbon. Considered the great jewel of the area, its history as the summer playground for the aristocracy and upper bourgeoisie, has left a splendid architectural legacy.
Among the emblematic palaces, the National Palace of Sintrafrom the 16th century in São Martinho, and the Palacio da Pena, built in 1836 by mandate of Prince Ferdinand II of Portugal stand out.

Because of its striking color and hodgepodge of styles, from neo-Gothic to Neomanuel, it seems to be out of a storybook.
Sintra is truffled with spectacular mansions and villas like the fascinating Quinta da Regaleira wrapped in gardens. If you go up to the Castello dos Mouros you will see unique views that reach the horizon line of the Atlantic Ocean. Its meandering walls recall the period of Islamic domination and the arrival of the first king of Portugal, Alfonso Henriques. The beauty of all this legacy has earned Sintra UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Splendid mansions and palaces now house small, charming hotels in the heart of the town. |

In 1995, Sintra was classified by UNESCO as World heritage. In this mystical town with its great number of historically and artistically interesting monuments, The Hotel Tivoli is one such monument it offers guests the unique environment of a palace built at the end of the 18th century, lying next to the countryside of Seteais. It is a place with an aura of magic, surrounded by the lush woodlands of the Sintra Mountain Range. The buildings neoclassic façade with its triumphal arch leading to a view point, has the mountain range as a backdrop and the sea in the distance, against a clear blue sky. The conversion of the palace into a hotel, which was inaugurated on 29th September 1955 was to bring even more pretige to a Sintra's hotel and hospitality tradition. Included among the many illustrious guests who have stayed there over the years, are Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, the writer Marguerite Yourcenar and the painter Maria Helena Viera de Silva. To stay the night or merely to dine in such exceptional surroundings, with the beauty of the mountain range and yet just a few minutes from the town centre, is without doubt a unique experience. Painstakingly restored, the inside of the palace is striking with its frescos and exquisite decoration, guests also have at their disposal numerous sitting rooms and dining rooms, a friendly bar and a magnificent terrace from which to appreciate the sunset at the end of the day.
