This historic city in western Slovakia, next to Austria, has a legacy that makes it well worth a stop. On the banks of the Danube River, the remarkable old town features buildings such as the St. Martin's Cathedral, where a dozen kings were crowned between the 16th and 19th centuries. And the Blue Church, surprising for its seductive color in Art Noveau style.
The imposing hilltop Bratislava Castle, has splendid views over the city and the river. Reach it through a small maze of cobbled streets. The Puerta de San Miguel, next to the castle, is one of the icons of the city. Its origin dates from the XIV century, but the baroque physiognomy comes from its subsequent reconstruction.

The charming Hlvne Namestie square is the hub of Bratislava. It houses the 14th century Old Town Hall, today the city's History Museum. The Old Slovakia National Theater, with a neoclassical shape, stands at the end of the elegant Hviezdoslav avenue, which is full of lively restaurants, cafés and shops. Stroll through the beautiful gardens of the Grasalkovich Palace, residence of the President, as the building is not open to the public.
As a medium sized city, Bratislava is very welcoming and easy to visit with magnificent historic buildings converted into luxury hotels offering accommodation. |
