With just fifteen separate Cottage Suites dotted around the main lodge building, the Owners Cottage and the Wharepapa Cottage, four kilometres from the Lodge, intimate, tranquil stays are guaranteed at Wharekauhau Country Estate. Designed by the award-winning interior designer Virginia Fischer, all cottages feature super-king beds, open gas fireplaces, underfloor heating, private verandas, flat-screen televisions, iPod docking stations and Wi-Fi. A dream holiday accommodation, Wharekauhau's Cottage Suites are a picture of luxury and offer dramatic vistas. Luxury features at the Cottage suites include deep sofas, fluffy pillows, heated marbled floors, and homemade cookies. In true Wharekauhau style, natural materials are used throughout the cottage suites, including clay tiles, pebble mosaics, plastered walls, rich New Zealand wool carpeting, cotton bed linen and hemp curtains. All guest cottages have the option to interconnect, so families and friends travelling together have the advantage of being able to interconnect with other rooms booked in their group. All Guest Cottages are located within 150 metres of the main lodge. Wharepapa Cottage: Wharepapa Cottage sits on the sloping pastures of Wharekauhau. This secluded retreat enjoys endless views of Palliser Bay and Lake Onoke Sandspit. This beautifully designed, warm and homely cottage is an ideal residence for a longer stay and exploring the estate and regoin over a few days. Fully self-maintained, this three bedroom cottage has a large open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area. The cottage comes with a full working kitchen, including: induction cook top, oven, microwave, refrigerator and freezer, and can be stocked with pre-arranged grocery items (at an additional cost). Wharepapa Cottage is located a short 4 km drive from the main lodge (Please note that having a car is advised). Catering Options: This cottage does not have a meal plan included in the rate. Options available include: Breakfast provisions are available in the cottage. For breakfast/dinner at Wharekauhau, guests are kindly informed that there is a 24 hour lead time required, and additional charges will apply. Owner's Cottage: The ultimate hideaway at the ultimate hideaway. The Owners Cottage is a world-class, 420 square metre hideaway that offers the best of both worlds - complete privacy and independence, as well as access to all of the Wharekauhau amenities. The Owners Cottage is located a short stroll from the main lodge with stunning views over the dramatic Palliser Bay. Built to make a statement, and yet it sits as an elegant stand-alone property framed by backdrop of the Rimutaka mountains. The Owners Cottage is unlike any other accommodation in the region. The 3.5 bedroom cottage is split between two levels, joined by an Oamaru sandstone staircase. The house has been designed to incorporate as much natural light as possible with high ceilings, large windows, and full sliding patio doors. The cottage has a central, open-plan lounge and dining area. It features deep chairs, a hidden flat screen television with integrated house BOSE audio visual system, and an open log-burning fireplace. A large dining table for private family dinner sits between the kitchen and the lounge. All three guest rooms have stunning views across Palliser Bay, and are filled with natural light. The downstairs master guest room also opens out onto a private paved courtyard. Each room is furnished with a king-sized bed, comfortable chairs for lounging, air-conditioning, and an open gas fireplace for added ambience. Each room has a private en-suite bathroom, complete with claw-foot baths and separate showers. The Master Guest bathroom also has a secluded outdoor shower. The house also has a fully functional, well-equipped kitchen. Guests can opt to join other guests at the main lodge, or to dine at the house with a personal chef. Additional charges apply and a minimum 48 hour notice period is required. The cottage comes complete with a study. Fitted with a workstation, Wi-Fi, and general office requirements. The study also has an additional sofa bed, which makes an ideal conversion into a 4th bedroom for private staff travelling with the party. A subterranean staircase winds down to the underground wine cellar. The cellar makes the ideal place to have a quite glass of wine before bed, or have the lodge sommelier come over and host an intimate wine tasting. The sweeping front patio extends out to a heated infinity pool and barbecue area. There is an outdoor gas fireplace with seating and exterior music for those still summer nights. A gazebo sits overlooking the ocean, as well as a private courtyard for the Master bedroom. For added privacy guests can land a helicopter directly at the cottage, and departures and arrives can be conducted in a way the no other guests would know you are hidden away at Wharekauhau. The house also has its own remote accessed electronic security gate. All accommodation includes: super king-sized beds; open gas fireplace; under-floor heating; heated marble floor in bathroom; double spa bat; walk-in wardrobe; iPod music docking station; LCD television connected with satellite TV; electronic safe; Wi-Fi; iron and ironing board; pre-dinner drinks and canapés; four-course dinner; full country breakfast each morning; champagne on arrival. At the roundabout take first exit onto Stewart Duff Drive. At next roundabout take first exit on Calabar Road. At next roundabout take first exit onto Cobham Drive. Drive through 1 roundabout. Continue on Wellington Road. Turn Right at Ruahine Street and follow this through Mt. Victoria Tunnel. Follow the road around the basin reserve taking the second major exit marked. State Highway 1. This road leads out of Wellington down the SH1on the motorway. At the split between SH1and SH2 take state highway 2 towards Upper Hutt.Leave Wellington, follow State Highway 2 through the Hutt Valley over Rimutaka Hill Road to Featherston. Do not drive through Featherston, once you reach the 70 km speed sign you need to take the first hard right into Western Lake Road. The signpost will also say ''Ocean Beach''. Please note - Featherston is the last petrol stop! (If you reach the 50 km sign then you have gone too far). 40km - follow along Western Lake Road. Please note that there is a portion of the road that is gravel. Stay on the road until you can see panoramic views of the bay. You will travel down a steep grade and over a bridge - you are nearly there. Just over the bridge there is a large wooden sign on the right hand side - ''Wharekauhau''. Just past that you will see a signpost - turn right and proceed up the driveway. You will find us at the front door awaiting your arrival. Remember to keep left.
